The snow just kept on falling which gave great conditions!

February 24, 2013

More familiar faces came back in February. This included ‘The Girls’- Alison, Yvette and Angela who were exceptional value last year and who really appreciate our efforts to make everyone feel ‘home from home’ at the chalet. They like to make sure ‘Monsieur’ (chalet host) does not get away with too much as well! They were joined by new people like Helen and Luke – fit as fiddles and they most certainly liked to ski. I might have overdone it a touch with them on the first morning though – hope not?

Paul Boreham, a regular visitor came back for a second time this season – he must like us!! This time he brought his two daughters with him to entertain the Tsar (Alex). And, Sue and her son James visited the chalet for the first time – no doubt the Tsar had a ball over half-term.

I’ve also added a few pictures from my own travels well ‘off the beaten track’ – skiing in a place called Volen about 50 kms north of Moscow!!

New Year 2013 – A Great Start to the Season

January 9, 2013

For New Year some great repeat guests who we now see as friends came and saw in 2013 with us. Team Brennan brought two new friends with them – Darren and Helen. A great time was had by all, as the pictures below testify too.

The Snow keeps falling although the Sun has tried to come out!

December 6, 2012

It would seem that the Alps are heading for one of the snowiest Decembers in years. Over 30 cms has fallen in Morzine and the surrounding villages this week with another 20 cms due over the weekend.

Rita has never been so ecstatic – yes you’ve guessed it – I’ve not been around!

All pictures taken from the chalet across or down the valley.

Snow comes early to Morzine

December 1, 2012

Temperatures plummeted across Europe this week which meant the snow arrived early. Please take a look at some pictures taken from the chalet earlier this week. It all looks fantastic. Should bode well for the forthcoming season.

The first serious snow of the Winter also hit Moscow with a vengeance this week. The city experiencing its biggest November snowstorm in 50 years with the average monthly, November snow falling in only 2 days. Just prior to this, I managed to catch the Spartak v Barca Champions League game at the Luzhniki stadium (last week). Barca are simply a marvelous team – two chances and the game was all over. A bit hard on Spartak who played quite well, had their own chances but never took any. That’s football at the top level these days I guess! It was very frustrating for the 80,000 Spartak fans who had turned up for the game.

It’s a long time since we’d been to the Costa Brava

August 19, 2012

Having ventured to Bulgaria for the last two years for our Summer hols. This year we decided to go with some friends (Charlie, Rosie and Izzy) to a lovely villa on the Costa Brava for our annual adventure off the beaten track. It was a long time since I’d been there – almost 30 years and Rita/ Alex (Tsar of Wales) had never been!

Having flown back from Moscow to check out the chalet for a couple of days. We then drove (less than 8 hours) to Empuriabrava just over the Spanish Pyrenees border, a beautiful village on a coastal plain which essentially is one of Europe’s largest Marinas. Located between arguably the more famous resorts of Roses and Escala it has 34 sq kms of canals which means most of the properties have their own moorings.

We had a great time chilling, visiting some of the other resorts and Catalunian towns and generally letting life pass by slowly. Here are some pictures of the fun we had………………………

Who would have believed after all these years!

June 23, 2012

Yes. After 35 years I finally caught up with my all time hero this week. Tom Petty, with his band the Heartbreakers played one of their rare UK concerts to a packed Albert Hall. There’s no doubt the boys are aging well and they definately can still play. Unsurprising, since at least three of them (Mike Campbell – guitars, Benmont Tench – keyboards and Ron Blair – bass) have been with him since the early days in the 70s. The aging but ‘young at heart’ crowd just lapped it up as they played all their well known songs (well, certainly for those of us who see the boys as icons) in a two hour plus set. Evidence and highlights are below:

Summer training for Snowsports

May 27, 2012

Here’s a series of videos to help you enjoy Summer sports and keep you in the mood for Winter recreation. They can also improve your snowsports performance. Thanks to BASS Network YouTube channel for the content.

Chalet Margaritka will be dacamping to the Russian Steppes, or Moscow to be more precise, as we have done the last couple of years. Posts of our experiences during the off season will , of course, be forthcoming.

We hope you have a great Summer.

Never turn down an opportunity!

April 29, 2012

In late April I was invited to attend a Global conference in San Francisco. Ski season hadn’t finished but I just had to go. SFC is a great city, completely unlike New York – much more laid back and almost, European like. Infact when we were on the boat trip (see below) it reminded me of Istanbul; built on many hills connected by dramatic suspension bridges. One thing most people don’t know is an eerie fog rolls in off the Pacific each day to shroud the city in mist – also causes the temperature to drop 10 degrees so it becomes very un-mediterranean like. Bear this in mind if you’ve not been and you get a chance to go there. We visited Google (office is like a university campus – eveything feels like a laid back, place of learning), Facebook and Yahoo amongst others.

We also went on a boat trip around the Bay area one evening, luckily no fog that day. Here’s a snapshot of the best pics:

Final guests but what a great season it was!!

April 29, 2012

Chalet Margaritka’s final guests of the Winter arrived in early April and over Easter. The weather was good, pistes relatively quiet and the skiing just fantastic. Infact, it just kept snowing all Winter – even in April, after most international skiers had disappeared the weather cooled and the snow returned. It has even kept on snowing after Avoriaz closed on 22nd April – every day you can see snow half way down the Super Morzine mountain which is visible from the chalet.
