January ’15 – And then the snow just wouldn’t stop falling!!

February 3, 2015

Old and new friends visited this month.  Paul Keech and the boys plus Kath & John Sherry (please send us a pic or two so we can include) returned for their annual visits. Mark Preston and his family and Alan Crowe – all good skiers were new visitors to our homely, comfortable chalet. Then during the last week of January the heaven’s opened and the snow didn’t stop falling!! It snowed virtually every day for 10 days – putting well over 100 cms down in the village. We’d never known anything like it!

Conditions in the Portes du Soleil will now be fantastic for the remainder of the season.

The snow’s a bit thin but fun was still had!! And, some great skiing was found.

January 15, 2015

The second weekend in January saw Alan Lawless returning to the chalet with his engineer friends from upp North (Preston area to be precise). They were joined by some new guests from the opposite end of England. Margaret Turgoose and her girlfriends arrived in the chalet from nr. Exeter, Devon. They had tried to come, one time before and this time made it to ensure we all had a great weekend!!

It really can be a small, old world. Margaret, Sarah and Sam all live in the same small village of a friend who I’ve known for years, from the days we used to share a house in London in the mid 1980’s. Thanks for the recommendation Liz, I think it’s time you paid us a visit once more – insist you come with the girls next time!!

It is always great when you have two separate groups who’ve never met before gel so well together, you’d have thought they had known each other for years!!

A great atmoshere and ambiance ensued all weekend as shown by these pics!

Pre Xmas and New Year at Chalet Margaritka

January 3, 2015

Before Xmas we were joined by Costin Mihaila (a former colleague) and Eunice his partner. Hadn’t seen Costin for a while so it was great to do some skiing with him. We had a good time despite a lack of snow – hope you don’t hold it against us Costin?

And, for New Year the Stubbins family arrived who’ve become firm favourites with us and (we hope with them!!) plus their friends the Hawkins family and Alison Stonham and Kev Driver (also, firm favourites at the chalet!!). The guys were extremely lucky because just before they arrived the heaven’s opened and more than 30 cms of snow fell in the village alone. This meant skiing conditions became just great overnight.

The pictures tell the story – everyone enjoyed themselves!!

The first snows of Winter fall – What a contrast in less than a week!!

October 24, 2014

The first snow fell this week, making for some great views from the chalet. Nantaux and Ressachaux always look spectacular with their first white hats on!

It was all a bit of a nice, shock really. The previous Sunday we’d all been for a long walk in the beautiful, Autumn Sunshine. Rita picked many mushrooms to make one of her lovely soups. And, apparently, it was the hottest October day on record in Morzine on the Sunday. We’d also really enjoyed watching Alex play football the previous day, sitting in the warm, sun in our shirt sleeves.

So hard to believe that a couple of days later or so the temperature dropped by more than 20 degrees and the snow fell. Even in the village for a while!

Enjoy the before and after views!!

A very pleasant, late Summer weekend in Turin!

September 29, 2014

Turin is less than three hours from the chalet via the breathtaking scenery surrounding the Mont Blanc Tunnel. The weather forecast for last weekend was great so we decided to decamp for a short break since we’d never visited before. The centre of the city is truly beautiful – impressive buildings, palaces and churches, many with stunning Renaissance architecture. There are many fantastic cafes, bars and restaurants as well and all are more reasonably priced in comparison to the Alps!!

It also gave Alex and I the opportunity to take in a top class, football match. Torino were entertaining Fiorentina in the Italian, Serie A and there is a ‘Special Relationship’ between the two sets of fans so the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. This was helped by the temperatures being in the mid to late 20’s C, despite it being the last weekend in September. It was a good game, close – finishing 1:1.

Here are some of the pics……

New Lifts in Avoriaz (Super Morzine/ Lindarets) this Winter!

September 21, 2014

Thought everyone would be interested in the new lifts planned for Avoriaz this Winter – its 50 years since Vuarnet (Olympic champion @ Squaw Valley in 1960) opened the purpose built resort, unbelievable!! Every year the Portes du Soleil is improving the lift system which facilitates their 650 kms plus of marked pistes.  The new, fast high speed chairs are going into the Super Morzine bowl  replacing the Proclou and Seraussaix chairs which link Super M with Avoriaz and Morzine respectively.  They’re also replacing the old 3 man Brochaux chair (opposite the Mossettes/ Swiss link), which takes skiers from the Abrocotine Valley above Avoriaz. Just click on the link for the details………

The New Seraussaix Chair

It’s all really good news for our ski area!!

This year we decided to visit the Costa Brava again – cos we love it!!

August 31, 2014

Yep, it’s that time again – The Summer posting.

The Spanish border is less of a drive from the chalet than going North to Calais. This time we decided to stay one night in Perpignan before crossing the border, It gave us the opportunity to see some of the cute places on the French coast before making the spectacular crossing into Spain and down to a fabulous little place – L’Estartit (although, it’s not so little these days).

We spent a wonderful 10 days in and around L’Estartit. A place some old friends from Wales used to talk about, many years ago. Obviously, we had a great time, let the photos tell the story:

So another great season comes to an end!!

April 13, 2014

Some final shots of a great season. Mike and Lesley came back for a second time this Winter, as did our friends Charlie, Rosie and their daughter Izzy. The weather was good, having cooled down a touch making the morning Spring snow fantastic. A great lunch at Chez Flo one day – Thanks Mike and Lesley and a more rustic visit to Chang-a-Bang the next – Alex and Izzy loved the burgers. The vinyl got another airing with the Ramones “Rocket to Russia” leading the way – Rosie insisted, honest!! Genuinely, a really good final weekend in April.

On any weekend new guests can make new friends!!

March 30, 2014

It must be something about March. Half term weeks are coming to an end and warmer, Spring weather is in the air. So we always find new guests arriving to stay at the chalet and meet some of our loyal customers who have visited many times!!

Half Term at Chalet Margaritka

March 10, 2014

So what do you do with the kids at half term. Well? Go skiing, of course!!

Here’s some shots of our guests and us enjoying the mountains with their/ our familys’ over the last few half term weeks. It’s always a fun time at the chalet since we have more children staying so the Tsar (Alex) of Wales comes into his element!

Not sure he counts as a child but even our nephew William turned up for the first time in 10 years (shame on you for leaving it so long!). And, just to prove skiing is just like riding a bike ie. you never forget. Within a day he was crashing through the powder with the Tsar and I.
